Rolex Day-Date 36 128239 specifications
Everything metal on this watch, from the fluted bezel to the last bracelet link, is 18 ct white gold. Consequently, the 128239 weighs far more than its appearance suggests, and that gap between look and heft defines the reference.

History and reference evolution
White gold has been part of the Day-Date line for decades, but it has always been the quiet sibling. The current Day-Date 36 128239 replaced the 118239 in 2019. Rolex kept the familiar shape, yet changed nearly everything you cannot see.
What the 2019 update changed
Calibre 3255 replaced calibre 3155. As a result, power reserve rose from 48 to 70 hours, and the new Chronergy escapement improved efficiency. Rolex certifies the watch to -2/+2 seconds a day after casing. The case and President bracelet were refined too, with the concealed Crownclasp keeping the bracelet visually continuous.
For an owner, the practical gain is reliability over a long weekend off the wrist. For a buyer, the gain is newer papers and a longer runway before the first service.
How the 118239 and 128239 compare on value
A 118239 is the cheaper route into white gold, often by a clear margin. However, a 3155 that has never been serviced will soon need one, and gold watches cost more to refinish properly. So compare the two on total cost, not asking price. Our service and value guide shows how a service changes resale.
Dials worth knowing
The 128239 dial list is shorter than the yellow gold one. Silver, white and black are the core options. Blue and blue ombré are the ones collectors prefer, because the colour lifts the pale metal. In 2023 Rolex also fitted the Puzzle dial to this reference, as the 128239-0056. Diamond-set variants round out the list. Meanwhile, the turquoise stone dial left the Day-Date 36 catalogue in 2026.
128239 pre-owned prices compared
These bands cover a standard dial on the President bracelet, as of October 2026. Notably, even the unworn band sits below the US list price.
| Condition | What it means | USD | MYR (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unworn, full set | Stickers or barely worn, box, card dated within ~2 years, all tags | US$44,000 – US$49,000 | RM180,000 – RM200,000 |
| Excellent, box & papers | Light wear, unpolished or lightly polished, warranty card present | US$40,000 – US$45,000 | RM163,000 – RM184,000 |
| Good, no papers | Normal wear, watch only or box only, service history helps | US$35,500 – US$39,500 | RM145,000 – RM161,000 |
| Polished or aftermarket parts | Soft case edges, replaced dial/bezel/bracelet, or non-Rolex parts | US$32,000 – US$36,000 | RM131,000 – RM147,000 |
Bands reflect asking and achieved prices from 2 public market sources in October 2026, rounded. Retail for comparison: US$49,600. Prices move; use them as a sense-check, not a quote.
What moves the price of this reference
The single biggest factor is the metal itself. White gold looks like steel, so buyers will not pay the premiums they pay for yellow or Everose. In fact, tracked market values for the 128239 sit around US$43,000 to US$44,000, even after a rise of about 9% over the year.
After that, dial colour decides the rest. Blue and blue ombré lead, while silver and white trail. Diamond dials add a premium, though it is smaller in percentage terms than on yellow gold. Bracelet stretch, an unpolished bezel and the full set then shift the price within each band.
Reading the market from Malaysia
Here, the 128239 is a harder watch to price locally. We found no Malaysian list price for a plain-dial example. Converted at 4.08, the US list of US$49,600 works out to about RM202,400. By contrast, an excellent used full set at US$40,000 – US$45,000 is roughly RM163,000 to RM184,000.
Grey dealers in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore stock this reference less often than yellow gold, so expect to wait for the right dial. Chrono24 listings give a useful spread, but filter by dial and by "with papers". Auction results are thin, because few white gold 36s come up. For background on why grey prices differ from list, read retail vs market price.
Red flags on price
Polished examples without papers still sit around US$32,000 to US$36,000. Therefore, any 128239 described as complete and unpolished below about US$32,000 (around RM130,000) needs a very close look. Low prices on this reference often point to a steel-cased replica, because steel and white gold look alike in photos.
Genuine vs replica: how to check a 128239
Most 128239 fakes are steel. That makes this the easiest Day-Date to fake convincingly in photos, but also one of the easiest to catch in person.
The weight test comes first
Pick it up. A genuine 128239 has a solid white gold case, bezel and bracelet, so it feels markedly heavier than a steel Datejust. If the watch feels light, nothing else matters. Rhodium plating also gives real white gold a bright, slightly cool white finish. Steel tends to look greyer beside it.
Dial and crystal
Next, read the day at 12. The day name should be spelled out in full, centred in an arched window, with even spacing. Then check the date at 3 under the Cyclops. Genuine magnification is 2.5x, and the lens sits dead centre over the window.
Genuine: cyclops magnification
- Date fills the lens edge to edge
- Numerals stay sharp right to the lens rim
- Lens sits centred over the date window
Warning signs
- Date looks small, with a visible margin
- Lens slightly off-centre or bubbled
- Strong blue anti-glare tint on top of the lens
Also look at the rehaut. ROLEX should repeat around the ring in sharp laser engraving, with the serial number at six. Replicas often show shallow or misaligned letters.
Genuine: laser-etched crown at 6 o'clock
- Made of tiny dots, hard to find without a loupe
- Sits in the crystal just above the 6 o'clock marker
- Present on most Rolex crystals from the early 2000s onward
Warning signs
- Bold and frosted, easy to spot head-on
- Solid lines instead of a dot matrix
- Off-centre, or placed on a reference/era that would not have it
Movement behaviour and hidden marks
Set the watch past midnight. On calibre 3255, the day and date both change instantly. Equally, the President bracelet should close with no visible clasp, and the small coronet should lift to open it. With the bracelet removed, the 750 gold hallmark and Swiss assay marks sit on the case between the lugs.
Genuine: date change behaviour
- Date snaps over within a minute or two of midnight
- Hands set back past midnight do not drag the date backwards
- Quick-set date clicks crisply in crown position 2
Warning signs
- Date starts moving around 22:00 and creeps until after midnight
- Half-turned date visible in the window for hours
- Quick-set feels gritty or needs several tries
What only a watchmaker can confirm
Some high-end fakes now use solid white gold cases. In that case, weight alone is not enough. A watchmaker should remove the solid caseback and confirm a genuine calibre 3255 by its Paraflex shock absorbers, Chronergy escapement and blue hairspring. They can also check for a swapped dial or non-Rolex bracelet parts. In Malaysia, independent watchmakers in KL offer this, and the Rolex service centre can verify a watch during a service.
Who the 128239 suits, and the alternatives
This is the Day-Date for someone who wants the substance without the signal. It suits professionals in conservative workplaces and owners who simply dislike yellow metal. Since it trades under list, it is also the best-value way into a current Day-Date 36.
The trade-off is resale. Yellow gold and especially Everose hold value better. If that matters, consider the Everose Day-Date 36 128235 or the classic yellow gold 128238. For more presence on the wrist, the platinum 128236 adds the ice blue dial and even more weight.
Ownership notes for white gold
White gold wears well, though it has one quirk. The bright white finish comes from rhodium plating, and on the most exposed surfaces it can soften over many years. In practice, the clasp cover and outer links show it first. A Rolex service restores the finish, so it is a maintenance item rather than a flaw.
On calibre 3255, Rolex suggests long intervals between services, and the 70-hour reserve means the watch keeps running between wears. Even so, budget for a full service at some point, because refinishing a gold President costs more than a steel Oyster. Keep the warranty card safe as well. Since the 128239 already trades under list, missing papers widen the discount further, as our box and papers guide explains.
Other watches to compare
If you like the look but not the price, the Datejust 36 126234 gives a similar white-metal style for far less. Our Day-Date 36 vs 40 comparison helps if you are unsure about size, and the Rolex materials guide explains white gold, Everose and platinum side by side.

Day-Date 36 128238
Yellow gold President, 36 mm, calibre 3255. Plain dials sit near retail; green and Puzzle dials do not.

Day-Date 36 128236
Platinum President with the fluted platinum bezel from 2022 and the platinum-only ice blue dial.

Day-Date 40 228239
White gold President with a fluted bezel. The quiet Day-Date, and usually the one trading furthest below retail.
128239 FAQ
How much is a Rolex Day-Date 36 128239?
The US list price is US$49,600 as of October 2026. We could not confirm a Malaysian list price for a plain-dial 128239; converted at 4.08, the US price is about RM202,400. Pre-owned full sets in excellent condition sell for about US$40,000 to US$45,000, so buying used saves real money.
Why does the white gold Day-Date sell below retail?
Because white gold looks like steel. Many Day-Date buyers want their gold to be seen, so demand concentrates on yellow and Everose. The 128239 therefore sees less waitlist pressure and softer resale. For a buyer who values discretion, that discount is the opportunity.
Is the Day-Date only available in gold?
The Day-Date comes only in 18 ct gold or 950 platinum. Rolex has never made it in steel or two-tone Rolesor. So a "steel Day-Date" is either a fake or a modified watch, and the 128239 is the closest thing to a steel look in the range.
Does white gold turn yellow over time?
Rolex's 18 ct white gold is rhodium-plated for its bright finish. With years of wear, the plating can thin on high points and show a faintly warmer tone. A Rolex service can restore it. It does not affect the gold itself, and it is not a sign of a fake.
Which dial is best on the 128239?
Blue and blue ombré dials lead on resale and suit the cool metal. Silver and white are cheaper on the used market, which suits buyers who want the lowest entry. Diamond dials add a premium but narrow your buyer pool when you sell.
Can a jeweller tell if a 128239 is fake?
A jeweller can test the metal, which catches steel replicas. However, they cannot judge the movement or dial. For that, use a watchmaker who opens the case. Our real vs fake Rolex guide lists what to ask for.
