What the Pearlmaster is, and why it matters to buyers
The Pearlmaster is Rolex's high-jewellery Datejust. Rolex launched the line in 1992 in 29 mm and 34 mm sizes, always in 18 ct gold and always gem-set. In 2015, the Pearlmaster 39 widened its appeal, and it was also the first Rolex to use calibre 3235.
However, the line is no longer in Rolex's catalogue. Dealers report it disappeared from rolex.com around 2022, without an announcement. That has two practical effects. First, there is no Pearlmaster retail price to anchor against. Second, every Pearlmaster for sale is pre-owned, and many have been worn, serviced or altered.
Who buys one today? Mostly people who want colour and gems from Rolex rather than an aftermarket jeweller. Since every Pearlmaster is gem-set, the stones carry much of the value. Checking them is therefore part of paying a fair Pearlmaster price, not an extra.
Every Pearlmaster reference compared
Our dataset covers the Pearlmaster 39 in yellow gold with a sapphire bezel, the 86348. Older 29 mm and 34 mm Pearlmasters, and other 39 mm metal and gem combinations, also exist. We do not yet track their prices, so treat the Pearlmaster figures below as specific to the 86348.

Retail is the current (or last) US list price. Pre-owned bands are rounded market ranges for October 2026; MYR ≈ USD × 4.08.
Note that the "Retail" column is blank because we could not confirm a last US list price. For context, Rolex Certified Pre-Owned dealers asked between US$85,000 and US$94,950 for an 86348 in 2026. Private Pearlmaster sales, by contrast, usually come in at prices well under those CPO asks.
Buying a Pearlmaster pre-owned: what drives the price
Pearlmaster prices depend on originality more than on any other factor. A watch with every Rolex stone intact is worth far more than one with even a single replacement. After that come the gem colourway, the sales channel, and the usual Rolex factors of papers and condition.
- Original stones. A replaced sapphire or diamond cuts value sharply. Ask in writing whether any stone has been replaced.
- Colourway. On the 86348, the SABLV (blue to green) and SAJOR (yellow to orange) bezels attract different buyers.
- CPO vs private. A Rolex CPO watch includes a warranty, yet often costs US$10,000 or more over a private sale.
- Bracelet wear. The five-piece gold links stretch and soften with use, and buyers notice.
- Papers. At these prices, the warranty card is essential. See our box and papers guide.
For Malaysian buyers, the realistic sources are Singapore and Hong Kong dealers, CPO programmes and international auctions. Local listings are rare. Our used Rolex prices guide explains how we set condition bands across the site.
Authenticating the gem-setting
With a Pearlmaster, most problems are not full fakes. Instead, they are genuine watches with altered stones, or Datejusts dressed up with aftermarket gems. So begin with the parts that only a Pearlmaster has.
First, check the bracelet. It should have five-piece rounded links and a concealed Crownclasp. A Jubilee, Oyster or President bracelet means the watch is not a Pearlmaster. Next, examine the bezel under a loupe. Rolex calibrates its stones closely, so colours should step evenly and every stone should sit level and tight. Uneven tones, raised stones or tool marks in the gold suggest replacements.
Then run the standard Rolex checks: Cyclops magnification, the rehaut engraving, the etched coronet at 6, and a solid caseback with gold hallmarks between the lugs. Our real vs fake Rolex guide walks through each one. Finally, have a Rolex service centre or an experienced gemmologist inspect the stones before you pay.
Alternatives in the current catalogue
If you want a current Rolex with a similar feel, the Datejust collection offers gold and gem-set options in several sizes. The Lady-Datejust suits smaller wrists. For a solid gold dress watch with a day display, the Day-Date is the obvious step up; our Day-Date 36 vs 40 comparison helps with sizing.
Pearlmaster FAQ
What is a Rolex Pearlmaster?
It is Rolex's gem-set branch of the Datejust family, introduced in 1992. Every Pearlmaster has a solid gold case and a gem-set bezel, dial or case, plus its own five-piece rounded-link bracelet. The first models were 29 mm and 34 mm. A 39 mm version followed in 2015, including the yellow gold Pearlmaster 39 86348.
Is the Rolex Pearlmaster discontinued?
In practice, yes. Several dealers report that the Pearlmaster left rolex.com around 2022. Rolex made no public announcement, so the exact date is uncertain. Either way, you cannot order one new from an authorised dealer today, and all purchases happen through pre-owned dealers, Rolex Certified Pre-Owned programmes or auctions.
How much does a Pearlmaster 39 cost pre-owned?
For the 86348, an excellent example with papers runs about US$70,000–85,000 in October 2026, roughly RM286,000–347,000. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned asks are higher, at about US$85,000–95,000. Watches with replaced stones, polished cases or no papers sell for well below those figures.
Can I buy a Pearlmaster in Malaysia?
Not new. Malaysian authorised dealers no longer list the Pearlmaster, and we could not confirm a past Malaysian list price. Pre-owned examples do surface, but rarely. Most buyers in Malaysia source one from Singapore or Hong Kong dealers, then arrange an independent inspection before paying.
How is a Pearlmaster different from a gem-set Datejust?
The Pearlmaster has its own bracelet, with five-piece rounded links, and is only made in gold. A Datejust can be ordered with gem-set options, but it uses Oyster, Jubilee or President bracelets. A Datejust fitted with aftermarket stones is not a Pearlmaster, even if a seller describes it as one.
