Rolex 1908 Price Guide & Models (2026)

This Rolex 1908 price guide covers the Perpetual 1908, Rolex's slim dress watch launched in 2023 to replace the Cellini line, in yellow gold, white gold and platinum.

What defines the Perpetual 1908

The 1908 is the Rolex for people who already have a Rolex. In other words, it is a dress watch first: 39 mm wide, just 9.5 mm thick, and made only in precious metals. Every model has a domed and fluted bezel, Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12, and a small seconds dial at 6. Underneath, there is calibre 7140, an automatic with a 66-hour reserve, visible through a sapphire caseback.

That last detail matters, because it is so rare. Rolex almost always fits solid backs, so the display back makes the 1908 unusual in the catalogue. It also helps buyers check authenticity, as we explain below. On the official Rolex 1908 page the line sits apart from the Oyster models, and the market treats it differently too.

From Cellini to Perpetual 1908

For decades, Rolex's dress watches were sold as the Cellini, named after the Renaissance goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini. The line began in the late 1960s. Unlike most Rolex models, its watches were never Oysters. They used thin precious-metal cases and, for long stretches, a mix of movement types.

The last Cellini generation

In 2014 Rolex relaunched the Cellini as a tighter family: Cellini Time, Cellini Date and Cellini Dual Time, later joined by a Moonphase. They shared a 39 mm gold case with a domed and fluted double bezel, solid casebacks and movements adapted from Rolex's existing calibres. They were well made; however, they sold slowly. As a result, many buyers never noticed them at all.

What changed in 2023

At Watches & Wonders 2023, Rolex discontinued the Cellini and launched the Perpetual 1908 in yellow and white gold. The case size and bezel idea carried over. Still, almost everything else changed:

  • A new movement. Calibre 7140 brought the Chronergy escapement, a silicon Syloxi hairspring and Superlative Chronometer certification.
  • A display back. The movement, with its Côtes de Genève finish and openworked gold rotor, is now on show.
  • A more readable dial. Arabic numerals and a small seconds sub-dial replaced the Cellini's sparser layouts.
  • A clearer identity. The name ties the watch to 1908, when Hans Wilsdorf registered the Rolex name, and "Perpetual" points to the self-winding rotor.

Later, in 2024, Rolex added the platinum 52506 with an ice blue guilloché dial. Then, in 2025, the Settimo seven-row gold bracelet arrived for the yellow gold model. For Cellini owners, the practical effect is that their watches are now discontinued, and they trade at modest prices on the secondary market.

Every Perpetual 1908 reference compared

There are three current references. Although all share the same case, movement and 50 m water resistance, metal, dial and price separate them.

The three references behave very differently. The platinum 52506 holds value best, because platinum is scarce and its dial is the most distinctive. However, that also means paying over list unless your boutique allocates one.

The yellow gold 52508 sits near list. So it is the safest middle ground: easy to resell, and the only 1908 with the Settimo bracelet option. Meanwhile, the white gold 52509 is the value buy. A lightly worn one costs roughly a quarter less than new, so Rolex 1908 prices start lowest there.

Buying in Malaysia

Malaysian authorised dealers such as Cortina Watch and The Hour Glass carry the full Rolex line, and the 1908 is generally easier to obtain than a steel sports model. Even so, compare the RM list price with the grey market before deciding. For the 52509, pre-owned saves over RM30,000. For the 52506, by contrast, retail is clearly cheaper. Ask whether a boutique quote includes sales tax, and compare Singapore prices only after currency and import costs. Our retail vs market price guide explains these gaps across the catalogue.

Authentication notes for the 1908

The display back is the buyer's friend. A genuine 1908 always shows calibre 7140 with Côtes de Genève stripes and an openworked gold rotor. Therefore, a 1908 with a solid back is wrong, and a generic-looking movement behind the glass is a warning. Also check the weight, since steel replicas feel light, and look for the engraved rehaut and the faint etched coronet in the crystal at 6.

That said, clone movements can still fool a casual look. So have a watchmaker confirm the calibre before paying privately, and follow the full checklist in our real vs fake Rolex guide. Rolex 1908 FAQ

What is the Rolex 1908?

The Perpetual 1908 is Rolex's dress watch collection, launched in 2023. Each model has a 39 mm, 9.5 mm-thick precious-metal case, a domed and fluted bezel, a small seconds dial and the automatic calibre 7140 visible through a sapphire back. It is named after 1908, the year Hans Wilsdorf registered the Rolex name.

Did the 1908 replace the Cellini?

Yes. Rolex retired the Cellini line in 2023 and launched the Perpetual 1908 the same year. The 1908 keeps the Cellini's 39 mm size and double bezel. However, it adds a new movement, a display caseback, Arabic numerals and a small seconds dial. Cellini watches are now discontinued and trade only pre-owned.

How much is the Rolex 1908 in Malaysia?

In October 2026 Malaysian authorised dealers list the 52508 at RM125,200, the 52509 at RM131,200 and the platinum 52506 at RM145,400. Pre-owned, the white gold model is the cheapest, at roughly RM84,000–100,000 with papers.

Does the Rolex 1908 hold its value?

It depends on the metal. In October 2026 the platinum 52506 trades about 17% above list and the yellow gold 52508 sits near list. The white gold 52509, by contrast, trades about 25% below. Do not buy any of them expecting a profit.

Is the Rolex 1908 waterproof?

It is water resistant to 50 metres, which covers rain and hand washing. It is not an Oyster case, though, and the crown does not screw down. Combined with a leather strap, that makes it a watch to keep out of the pool.
