Rolex 1908 52508 specifications

At 9.5 mm thick, this is one of the slimmest automatic watches Rolex makes. That figure, more than the 39 mm diameter, is what lets it slide under a shirt cuff.

History and reference evolution

The 52508 has no direct predecessor. Rolex launched the Perpetual 1908 at Watches & Wonders 2023 and, at the same time, retired the Cellini line. The name refers to 1908, the year Hans Wilsdorf registered the Rolex name. "Perpetual" nods to the self-winding rotor Rolex patented in the 1930s.

What it took from the Cellini, and what it dropped

The modern Cellini watches already had a 39 mm case with a domed and fluted double bezel. The 1908 keeps that bezel. Otherwise, it is a different watch. The Cellini dials were often plain and largely without numerals. The 1908, by contrast, has Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12, plus a small seconds sub-dial at 6.

The bigger change is underneath. The 1908 introduced calibre 7140, a new automatic movement with the Chronergy escapement, a silicon Syloxi hairspring and 66 hours of reserve. Unusually for Rolex, the movement is on show through a sapphire caseback.

Launch dials and the 2025 bracelet

At launch the yellow gold 52508 came with intense white or intense black dials on an alligator strap. In 2025 Rolex added the Settimo bracelet, a seven-row design of small gold links. That gave the 52508 a second personality: a dressy strap watch or a full gold bracelet piece.

Why this matters for value

Because the reference is new, there is no older generation dragging prices down. Instead, its value depends on how the market treats a dress watch from a sports-watch brand. So far, yellow gold has been the most liquid metal for the Rolex 1908 52508 and its siblings. The Settimo version may change that balance as more reach the second-hand market.

52508 pre-owned prices compared

The table shows October 2026 bands for the Rolex 1908 52508. The US list price is US$28,850, and Malaysian ADs list it at RM125,200. WatchCharts tracked the market at about US$29,900 in October 2026, just above list.

What moves the price of this reference

Our papers band is unusually wide, from about US$21,000 to US$33,000. That reflects a thin, young market where individual sellers set very different asks. Several factors explain where a watch lands.

  • Dial colour. The black and white dials appeal to different buyers. Neither commands a consistent premium yet, so compare like with like.
  • Full set. Box, warranty card and tags matter more on a dress watch, since many buyers are gifting or celebrating an occasion.
  • Strap condition. Alligator wears out. A tired, stretched strap means a replacement from Rolex, which a buyer will price in.
  • Settimo bracelet. A 2025 bracelet example is a different proposition from a strap watch. Check which you are being quoted.

Where to check prices

Start with the AD price. Unlike a steel sports Rolex, the 1908 is generally easier to obtain at Malaysian boutiques, so retail is a real option. Next, look at grey dealers and WatchCharts. On marketplaces, filter for the same dial and strap and note card dates. Auction results for the 1908 are still few, so they say little. Our used Rolex price guide explains how we combine these sources.

When a price is too good to be true

Our lowest band, for polished or aftermarket examples, starts around US$15,100. So a 52508 offered with box and papers below about US$15,000 (roughly RM61,000) should worry you. At that price, solid 18 kt gold and a 2023-onward movement do not add up.

Genuine vs replica: how to check a 52508

Dress watches are easier to fake than chronographs: fewer parts, no bezel action, no pushers. That is why the display back helps the buyer here. For the full checklist, see our real vs fake Rolex guide.

Start with the movement window

First, turn the watch over. A genuine Rolex 1908 52508 shows calibre 7140 through the sapphire back. Look for crisp Côtes de Genève stripes on the bridges and an openworked rotor in gold. Replica movements often have blurry or stamped-looking stripes and a plain steel rotor coloured gold. Also, the rotor should spin quietly, without a loud whirr.

Next, watch the small seconds at 6, because it reveals the beat rate. Calibre 7140 beats at 28,800 vph, so the hand moves in fine, smooth steps.

Genuine: seconds-hand sweep

8 steps per second(one second, magnified)
  • 28,800 vph: eight small steps per second, reads as a smooth glide on video
  • Steady amplitude, no stutter when the watch is tilted
  • A quiet, fine-grained ticking close to the ear

Warning signs

4 steps per second(one second, magnified)
  • Visibly choppier steps (often 21,600 vph or slower)
  • A single one-second tick means a quartz movement
  • Loud, rattly rotor noise when the watch is shaken
On a genuine 52508, the small seconds hand at 6 o'clock moves in eight fine steps per second, matching calibre 7140's 28,800 vph.

Dial, bezel and crystal

Then look at the dial. The Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12 should be sharp and evenly spaced. The domed-and-fluted bezel needs crisp flutes with no soft, rounded tops. In addition, the crystal carries a laser-etched coronet just above 6.

Genuine: laser-etched crown at 6 o'clock

visible only with a loupe at an angle
  • Made of tiny dots, hard to find without a loupe
  • Sits in the crystal just above the 6 o'clock marker
  • Present on most Rolex crystals from the early 2000s onward

Warning signs

obvious to the naked eye
  • Bold and frosted, easy to spot head-on
  • Solid lines instead of a dot matrix
  • Off-centre, or placed on a reference/era that would not have it
On the 52508, the etched coronet in the crystal at 6 sits above the small seconds sub-dial. It should be faint and dotted, not bold.

Inside the crystal, the rehaut carries an engraving and the serial number. Finally, check the strap and clasp: the folding clasp should be solid yellow gold with clean, sharp edges.

What only a watchmaker can confirm

On a Rolex 1908 52508, a watchmaker can confirm the 7140 calibre markings and the silicon Syloxi hairspring. They can also test the rate and the 66-hour reserve. Moreover, they can confirm the case is 18 kt gold rather than plated brass or steel. Pair that with the papers check in our box and papers guide.

Who the 52508 suits, and the alternatives

The Rolex 1908 52508 suits a buyer who already owns a sports Rolex and wants something formal. It also suits anyone who likes the idea of seeing the movement. At 39 mm and 9.5 mm, it wears well on most wrists, including slimmer ones.

Wrist fit and ownership

On a 16–17 cm (6.3–6.7 in) wrist, the 39 mm case sits comfortably inside the wrist edges. Because the case is so thin, it also works on wrists up to about 19 cm without looking undersized. Yellow gold reads warm against tanned skin, so the white dial tends to look softer and the black dial sharper.

Ownership is simple, though the strap needs planning. In Malaysia's humidity, alligator can darken and crack within a couple of years of daily wear. Therefore, rotate the watch or keep a spare strap. Servicing goes through the Rolex service centre in Kuala Lumpur, and Rolex currently suggests a service roughly every ten years. Our service and value guide explains why a documented service record helps at resale.

It is less suited to daily wear in heavy heat and rain, because of the strap and 50 m rating. If you need everyday toughness, look at a Datejust 41 126334 instead.

Within the line, the white gold 52509 is the cheaper pre-owned option, while the platinum 52506 adds the ice blue guilloché dial. Our Perpetual 1908 collection page compares all three side by side.

52508 FAQ

Does the Rolex 1908 have a display caseback?

Yes. Every Perpetual 1908, including the 52508, has a sapphire caseback that shows calibre 7140, with its Côtes de Genève bridges and openworked gold rotor. That is rare for Rolex, which puts solid backs on almost all its watches. On a 1908, a solid back would be a red flag.

How much is the Rolex 1908 52508 in Malaysia?

Malaysian authorised dealers, including Cortina Watch and The Hour Glass, list the 52508 at RM125,200 in October 2026. A pre-owned example with box and papers converts to roughly RM86,000–135,000, depending on dial, strap and age. Clean, recent full sets sit at the top of that range.

Is the 52508 water resistant?

To 50 metres. The 1908 is not an Oyster case and its crown does not screw down, so treat it as splash-proof for daily life. Do not swim with it, and keep the alligator strap away from water, which ruins leather quickly in a humid climate.

Is the yellow gold 1908 better value than the white gold?

In 2026 market terms, yes for holding value. The 52508 trades near its US$28,850 list price, while the white gold 52509 sits well below its US$30,300 list. For a buyer that cuts both ways: the 52509 is the cheaper way into a 1908 pre-owned.

What is the Settimo bracelet?

Settimo is a seven-row gold bracelet that Rolex introduced for the yellow gold 1908 at Watches & Wonders 2025. It replaces the alligator strap with small, contoured gold links. Bracelet examples are still new to the secondary market, so prices are less settled than for strap versions.
