Rolex 1908 platinum 52506 specifications

The case dimensions match the gold 1908s exactly. What changes is the density of 950 platinum, which makes this the heaviest watch in the line, and the dial.

History and reference evolution

When Rolex launched the Perpetual 1908 in 2023, it offered only yellow and white gold. A year later, at Watches & Wonders 2024, it added the 52506 in platinum. Rolex did not treat it as a simple metal swap. Instead, it gave the platinum model its own dial and its own finishing details.

The ice blue guilloché dial

The dial is ice blue, the colour Rolex keeps for platinum. More unusually, it is decorated with a rice-grain guilloché, a pattern traditionally cut on a rose engine. The pattern radiates from the small seconds at 6 o'clock across the whole dial. The hour markers and numerals are faceted 18 kt white gold. It was the first guilloché dial on a 1908, and it gave the line a more classical character.

Strap and clasp

The 52506 comes on a matt brown alligator strap. It closes with a platinum Dualclasp, a double folding clasp, rather than the gold clasps of the 52508 and 52509. That is a small detail, but it matters when checking a watch: a gold clasp on a 52506 means a replaced part.

Why these details matter for value

The 52506 combines the one metal Rolex makes in small numbers with the only decorated dial in the series. As a result, it is the 1908 that collectors chase. Its launch price was US$30,900 in 2024. By October 2026, the US list had risen to US$33,600, and the market sits higher still.

The table shows October 2026 bands for the Rolex 1908 platinum 52506. The US list price is US$33,600, and Malaysian ADs list it at RM145,400. WatchCharts tracked the market at about US$39,200, roughly 17% above list.

What moves the price of this reference

Platinum itself carries a premium, because Rolex makes far fewer platinum watches than gold ones. On top of that, the dial is the 1908 that photographs best and draws the most attention. Then the usual factors take over: complete set, card date and strap condition. A 52506 without its original platinum Dualclasp, or with a heavily worn strap, drops toward the lower bands.

The bands are tighter here than for the 52508, because fewer sellers are guessing. Excellent full sets cluster between about US$37,500 and US$40,800, or roughly RM153,000–166,000.

Where to check prices

The AD price is the bargain, if you can get it. In Malaysia, RM145,400 at retail compares with a grey market that is clearly higher. Therefore, ask your boutique first, especially if you have bought from them before. On the secondary market, WatchCharts gives a useful average, while dealer asks show the realistic ceiling. Auction results for the 52506 are still rare, so a single result can mislead. For broader context, see our used Rolex price guide.

When a price is too good to be true

Our lowest band starts around US$27,000, for polished or modified watches. So a 1908 platinum 52506 offered as a full set under about US$27,000 (roughly RM110,000) is a serious red flag. Platinum metal value and steady demand leave genuine sellers no reason to go that low.

Genuine vs replica: how to check a 52506

The 52506's guilloché dial is genuinely hard to copy well, which helps buyers. Still, the best replicas get close in photos. Use the checks below, then follow the full process in our real vs fake Rolex guide.

The dial under a loupe

A real rice-grain guilloché is cut, so each facet has sharp edges that flash as you tilt the watch. Replica dials are usually stamped or printed. Under a loupe they look soft, with rounded edges and less depth. Also check the colour: a genuine ice blue is pale and cool, not a saturated sky blue.

The applied numerals at 3, 9 and 12 should be faceted white gold, sharply polished and evenly set. Next, find the faint laser-etched coronet in the crystal above 6.

Genuine: laser-etched crown at 6 o'clock

visible only with a loupe at an angle
  • Made of tiny dots, hard to find without a loupe
  • Sits in the crystal just above the 6 o'clock marker
  • Present on most Rolex crystals from the early 2000s onward

Warning signs

obvious to the naked eye
  • Bold and frosted, easy to spot head-on
  • Solid lines instead of a dot matrix
  • Off-centre, or placed on a reference/era that would not have it
On the platinum 52506, the etched coronet sits just above the guilloché small seconds. It should be a faint dot pattern, barely visible against the ice blue.

Weight, clasp and caseback

Platinum is roughly a third denser than 18 kt gold and more than twice as dense as steel. So a genuine 52506 feels dense in the hand, and a steel replica feels noticeably lighter. Then check the clasp. It should be a platinum Dualclasp, cleanly machined and Rolex-signed.

Genuine: clasp and bracelet machining

sharp, even edges; deep, clean engraving
  • Crisp transitions between brushed and polished surfaces
  • Clasp blade and logo cleanly milled, not stamped-looking
  • Bracelet links tight, quiet, no rattle; screws not pins on modern pieces

Warning signs

soft edges, wavy or shallow engraving
  • Polishing bleeds over brushed edges
  • Fuzzy logo, uneven font, or stamped-in look
  • Loose links, sharp burrs inside the clasp, cheap spring-loaded feel
The 52506 uses a platinum Dualclasp. Look for crisp edges and a clean coronet; a gold or rough-edged clasp means a replaced or fake part.

Finally, turn it over. The sapphire back should reveal calibre 7140 with crisp Côtes de Genève and an openworked gold rotor.

What only a watchmaker can confirm

A watchmaker can confirm the 7140 calibre markings and the silicon Syloxi hairspring, then measure rate and reserve. With the right tools, they can also test that the case is platinum. In addition, they can tell whether the dial has been refinished. For the paperwork side, see our serial number guide.

Who the 52506 suits, and the alternatives

The Rolex 1908 platinum 52506 is for the collector who wants the most refined version of the line. It also suits anyone who enjoys dial craft more than brand recognition. Few people will spot it as platinum, and fewer still will know what guilloché means.

Wearing it

At 39 mm and 9.5 mm, it wears like the gold models. However, the platinum case gives it a solid feel that suits larger wrists, roughly 16.5 to 19.5 cm (6.5 to 7.7 in). The brown strap and ice blue dial work best with grey or navy tailoring.

Alternatives

If budget matters more than metal, the white gold 52509 offers the same case and movement at a large discount pre-owned. The yellow gold 52508 is the warmer choice. For more platinum and ice blue, the Day-Date 40 228206 is the obvious step up. Our 1908 collection guide compares all three 1908 references.

52506 FAQ

Why is the 1908 52506 dial ice blue?

Rolex reserves ice blue dials for its platinum watches, as on the platinum Day-Date and the platinum Daytona 126506. The colour works as a quiet signal of the metal, since platinum looks much like steel. On the 52506, the ice blue also carries a rice-grain guilloché pattern, a first for the 1908 line.

How much is the Rolex 1908 platinum 52506 in Malaysia?

Malaysian authorised dealers list the 52506 at RM145,400 in October 2026. Pre-owned with box and papers, it converts to roughly RM153,000–166,000, so a grey-market example costs more than a new one at retail. That makes a boutique allocation worth chasing.

What is a rice-grain guilloché dial?

Guilloché is a pattern cut into metal on a rose engine. "Rice grain" describes small, elongated facets that repeat across the surface like scattered grains. On the 52506 the pattern spreads out from the small seconds at 6. It catches light very differently from a flat lacquer dial, which is why photos rarely do it justice.

When was the platinum 1908 introduced?

Rolex added the 52506 in 2024, a year after the gold 1908 models launched. At launch it was priced at US$30,900; by October 2026 the US list had risen to US$33,600. It remains in the catalogue and is not a limited edition.

Is the platinum 1908 worth the extra over the gold models?

On the numbers, yes for holding value. The 52506 trades about 17% over list, while the white gold 52509 trades about 25% under. If you simply want a 1908 to wear, however, the 52509 is the cheaper route.
