Rolex Daytona platinum 126506 specifications

Most figures below match every other modern Daytona. The two that set the platinum Daytona 126506 apart are the metal, which is 950 platinum throughout, and the caseback, which is sapphire rather than solid.

History and reference evolution

Rolex launched the platinum Daytona in 2013 as the 116506, marking the model's 50th anniversary. It introduced two codes that still define this watch. First, the ice-blue dial, which Rolex keeps for platinum. Second, the chestnut-brown Cerachrom bezel. The 116506 was also the first Daytona with a ceramic bezel, three years before the steel 116500LN.

From 116506 to 126506

Ten years later, the 60th anniversary brought the 126506 to Watches & Wonders 2023. Inside sits calibre 4131, with the Chronergy escapement, a blue Parachrom hairspring and Rolex Côtes de Genève on the bridges. The reserve is listed at 72 hours.

The visible changes are small but useful. A thin platinum edge now frames the ceramic bezel. The counter rings are slimmer and contrast more clearly with the dial. Meanwhile, the case lines were refined, although the 40 mm diameter stays the same.

The sapphire caseback

The biggest change is at the back. The 126506 became the first standard-catalogue Cosmograph Daytona with a display caseback. Through it you can see the 4131 and its 18 kt gold oscillating weight. Rolex rarely fits clear backs, so this detail matters for both value and authentication.

Why it matters for value

Collectors rewarded the update. Because the display back and new calibre are only found on the 126506, it carries a premium over the older 116506. On the other hand, the sapphire back adds one more surface to inspect for scratches. The dataset lists one current standard variant, 126506-0001 in ice blue. Diamond-set dials exist, but we exclude them here.

Bands reflect asking and achieved prices from 3 public market sources in October 2026, rounded. Retail for comparison: US$84,600. Prices move; use them as a sense-check, not a quote.

Against a US list price of US$84,600 and RM366,000 in Malaysia, this platinum Daytona trades well above retail. Wristcheck put the 126506 at about US$116,000 in July 2026, roughly 37% over list. October dealer asks for the standard dial run from about US$115,000 to US$135,000.

What moves the price of this reference

The dial is the first split. Standard ice blue is what our bands cover. Baguette and other gem-set dials sell to a different buyer, so ignore those listings when you compare.

Completeness matters more here than on gold models. Buyers expect the platinum-model warranty card, box and tags, because the price gap between a full set and a loose watch is large. Our box and papers guide explains why.

Finally, inspect surfaces. Platinum scuffs readily, yet it takes refinishing well. Even so, an unpolished case with sharp edges commands more. Also check the sapphire caseback for scratches, and note the card date, since recent cards ask more.

Where to check prices

Boutique list price is your floor, not your target, because few buyers get an allocation. Grey dealers set the real market, and their asks for the Daytona 126506 sit in a band about US$20,000 wide. Marketplace listings often mix gem dials with standard ones, so filter carefully. Auction results are useful as a sanity check, but they are sparse for a reference this new. For a broader method, see our used Rolex prices guide.

In Malaysia, few platinum Daytonas appear on local classifieds. As a result, most local buyers end up dealing with established dealers in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Hong Kong. Agree the price in US dollars where you can, then convert at about 4.08 so the ringgit figure is transparent.

When a price is too good to be true

Our lowest band, for polished or modified pieces, starts near US$90,000. Therefore, any platinum Daytona 126506 offered under about US$95,000 (roughly RM388,000) with box and card deserves serious suspicion. At that level, expect a fake, a stolen watch or a hidden problem.

Genuine vs replica: how to check a 126506

Counterfeiters target this reference because of its price, and the display back has not stopped them. Better copies now show a decorated movement through the sapphire. So the clear back helps you, but only if you know what a genuine 4131 looks like.

Weight and metal

Start with weight. Platinum is denser than gold, so a genuine 126506 feels far heavier than even the white-gold 126509. Steel-cored fakes cannot match it. Platinum also has a slightly greyer, softer lustre than polished steel. An XRF test settles any doubt within a minute.

Genuine: caseback

plain, fluted screw-down back
  • Solid Oystersteel or gold, fluted edge for the case wrench
  • No engraving on most models (some are factory-engraved, e.g. Sea-Dweller and Deepsea)
  • Display backs are factory-fitted only on certain models (e.g. some Daytona, 1908, Land-Dweller)

Warning signs

see-through or engraved back
  • Exhibition window on a model Rolex makes with a solid back
  • Stickers or decorative engravings sold as 'factory'
  • Back that turns too easily or sits proud of the case
The 126506 is one of the few Daytonas with a factory sapphire back; look for the 4131 and an 18 kt gold rotor behind it.

Dial and bezel colours

The genuine ice blue is pale and even, without a green or grey cast. The chestnut-brown bezel should look warm brown, not maroon or black. Check that the numerals are moulded and crisp, with the thin platinum edge sitting flush around the ceramic.

Crown, pushers and engravings

Look for a Triplock crown with three marks under the coronet, plus screw-down pushers. The rehaut carries engraved ROLEX lettering and the serial at 6. Above 6 o'clock, a laser-etched coronet sits in the crystal.

Genuine: laser-etched crown at 6 o'clock

visible only with a loupe at an angle
  • Made of tiny dots, hard to find without a loupe
  • Sits in the crystal just above the 6 o'clock marker
  • Present on most Rolex crystals from the early 2000s onward

Warning signs

obvious to the naked eye
  • Bold and frosted, easy to spot head-on
  • Solid lines instead of a dot matrix
  • Off-centre, or placed on a reference/era that would not have it
On the 126506, the etched coronet sits in the crystal above the ice-blue dial at 6 and is only visible at an angle.

Genuine: seconds-hand sweep

8 steps per second(one second, magnified)
  • 28,800 vph: eight small steps per second, reads as a smooth glide on video
  • Steady amplitude, no stutter when the watch is tilted
  • A quiet, fine-grained ticking close to the ear

Warning signs

4 steps per second(one second, magnified)
  • Visibly choppier steps (often 21,600 vph or slower)
  • A single one-second tick means a quartz movement
  • Loud, rattly rotor noise when the watch is shaken
The 4131 in the 126506 beats at 28,800 vph; watch the small seconds at 6, or the central chronograph hand when running.

What only a watchmaker can confirm

Even through sapphire, a watchmaker should look closer. With the back off and a loupe, they can confirm calibre 4131 markings, the Chronergy escapement, the blue Parachrom hairspring and genuine 18 kt gold in the rotor. They can also confirm the case metal and test chronograph function on a timing machine. A clone movement usually shows rougher finishing at the edges of the bridges and screws.

Who the 126506 suits, and the alternatives

This watch suits a buyer who wants the most complete modern Daytona and is happy to pay well over list for it. It is understated from a distance, since platinum resembles steel. Up close, though, the ice blue and chestnut bezel are unmistakable to anyone who knows Rolex.

If the weight and premium feel excessive, consider the white-gold 126509, which trades near list. The 126519LN offers white gold on Oysterflex with a ceramic bezel. If it is the ice-blue dial you want, the platinum Day-Date 40 228236 uses the same colour code. For the wider metal debate, read Daytona steel vs gold.

126506 FAQ

Why is the platinum Daytona dial ice blue?

Rolex reserves its ice-blue dial for platinum watches. You will find it on the platinum Day-Date and on the Daytona 126506, but not on gold or steel models. As a result, the colour works as a quick visual code for the metal. A steel or gold Daytona with an ice-blue dial is either a modified watch or a fake.

How much is the Rolex Daytona 126506?

US list price is US$84,600, and Malaysian retail is RM366,000. On the secondary market, a full set in excellent condition asks around US$114,000 to US$125,000 in October 2026. That is roughly RM465,000 to RM510,000. Unworn pieces with a recent card ask more.

Does the 126506 have a display caseback?

Yes. It was the first standard-catalogue Cosmograph Daytona with a sapphire caseback, showing calibre 4131 and its 18 kt gold oscillating weight. The older 116506 had a solid back. So a 116506 with a clear back is not original.

Is the platinum Daytona heavier than the gold ones?

Yes, noticeably. Platinum is denser than 18 kt gold, and the 126506 uses it for the case and the full Oyster bracelet. Most owners notice the extra weight within minutes. In practice, that weight is also one of the simplest checks against a fake built on a steel core.

Does the 126506 hold its value?

Better than any other precious-metal Daytona in our data. Wristcheck put it at about 37% over list in July 2026, and dealer asks in October sit well above US$84,600. That said, premiums can shrink, so buy it because you want it, not as a forecast.

What is the difference between the 116506 and the 126506?

The 126506 adds calibre 4131 with the Chronergy escapement, a sapphire caseback and a thin platinum edge around the Cerachrom bezel. The counter rings are slimmer too. By contrast, the 116506 uses calibre 4130 behind a solid back. Both share the ice-blue dial and chestnut-brown bezel.
