History and reference evolution

The 228236 is a 2022 watch. Its predecessor, the 228206, launched with the Day-Date 40 family in 2015. Therefore the story here is short, but it turns on one technical change.

The first fluted platinum bezel

Every gold Day-Date wore a fluted bezel. The platinum one did not. Platinum is dense and hard to machine cleanly, so Rolex used a smooth, domed bezel on the 228206 instead. At Watches & Wonders 2022, however, Rolex showed a new process for fluting 950 platinum. The 2022 Day-Date 40 launch paired that bezel with the ice blue dial. For the first time, the platinum President matched the look of its gold siblings.

That change matters for value. Buyers who had passed on the plainer 228206 now had the classic President silhouette in the rarest metal. So the 228236 quickly moved above retail, while the 228206 settled below the new model.

What stayed the same

Mechanically, little changed. Both references use calibre 3255 with a 70-hour reserve. Both also carry the platinum President bracelet with its concealed Crownclasp. The 40 mm case shape, with its slim lugs, is shared with every Day-Date 40.

Dial range

Ice blue is the signature, and ice blue with Arabic numerals is the collector favourite. Beyond that, the 228236 has offered black, a blue ombré and meteorite with diamonds. Ice blue with baguette diamonds and fully paved dials sit far above the standard price.

Bands reflect asking and achieved prices from 3 public market sources in October 2026, rounded. Retail for comparison: US$68,800. Prices move; use them as a sense-check, not a quote.

With retail at US$68,800, an excellent full set at US$70,000 – US$80,000 trades about 9% above list at the midpoint. Dealers asked about US$84,700–87,500 for new or nearly new pieces in 2026. In ringgit, the Malaysian list price is RM298,000, roughly 6% above the converted US figure.

What moves the price of this reference

First, the dial. Ice blue and ice blue Arabic draw the most buyers, while baguette and paved dials are a different market altogether. Second, completeness. At this price, a missing warranty card is a serious discount, not a detail.

Third, the bezel. Platinum flutes are the reason to buy this watch over a 228206. Consequently, any sign of polishing on them costs money. Finally, the market is thin. With few trades, spreads between dealers are wide, so you can find both bargains and silly asks in the same week.

Where to check prices

Start with the AD list price, then grey dealers in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong. Because so few trade, look at sold prices rather than asks wherever you can. Global marketplaces are useful for dial premiums, but watch out for listings that mix 228236 and 228206 photos. Auction houses sell the special dials more often than standard ice blue ones. Our retail vs market price guide explains why platinum often sells above list.

When a price is too good to be true

Our lowest band starts near US$56,000. That is also where clean 228206s trade. So if a "228236" is offered under about US$55,000, roughly RM224,000, first confirm the bezel is fluted. Then check the card says 228236, not 228206.

Genuine vs replica: how to check a 228236

Platinum is denser than gold. A genuine 228236 is therefore the heaviest watch in the Day-Date 40 range, and noticeably heavier than a steel fake. Weight is your first test.

Metal and hallmarks

Look for Pt950 and Swiss assay hallmarks between the lugs once the bracelet is off. Also check the flutes. Rolex cuts them sharp and even; on fakes, the flute tips are often rounded or uneven. Platinum also has a whiter, cooler tone than steel under daylight.

Dial, crystal and date

The ice blue should be pale and even, not turquoise. Next, check the day window at 12. The day should be spelled out in full and centred in its arched aperture.

Genuine: cyclops magnification

2828approx. 2.5x
  • Date fills the lens edge to edge
  • Numerals stay sharp right to the lens rim
  • Lens sits centred over the date window

Warning signs

2828approx. 1.5x
  • Date looks small, with a visible margin
  • Lens slightly off-centre or bubbled
  • Strong blue anti-glare tint on top of the lens
On a genuine 228236 the date fills the Cyclops at 2.5x. Many replica platinum Day-Dates use a weaker lens, leaving white space around the numerals.

The rehaut should repeat ROLEX in clean laser engraving, with the serial at 6. The letters should sit in line with the minute markers all around the dial.

Genuine: rehaut engraving alignment

markers on the minute track
  • Each engraved crown and letter lines up with its minute marker
  • Engraving is crisp, even in depth, and readable at 12 o'clock
  • Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 on modern pieces

Warning signs

markers drift off-track
  • Letters drift between markers as they go around the ring
  • Shallow, sandy-looking or uneven engraving
  • Serial at 6 printed rather than engraved, or wrong format
The 228236's rehaut engraving should align with every minute marker. Letters that wander, or a printed serial, point to a replica.

Caseback

The back is solid, plain platinum, screwed down. No Day-Date has a factory display back.

Genuine: caseback

plain, fluted screw-down back
  • Solid Oystersteel or gold, fluted edge for the case wrench
  • No engraving on most models (some are factory-engraved, e.g. Sea-Dweller and Deepsea)
  • Display backs are factory-fitted only on certain models (e.g. some Daytona, 1908, Land-Dweller)

Warning signs

see-through or engraved back
  • Exhibition window on a model Rolex makes with a solid back
  • Stickers or decorative engravings sold as 'factory'
  • Back that turns too easily or sits proud of the case
A genuine 228236 has a plain, solid platinum caseback. A sapphire window or decorative engraving means the case is not original.

What only a watchmaker can confirm

Inside the case, a watchmaker can confirm calibre 3255, the blue Parachrom hairspring and correct finishing. They can also confirm the dial is genuine and unrestored. For a watch at this price, an inspection before payment is cheap insurance. Our real vs fake Rolex guide covers the full sequence, and our box and papers guide explains what a complete set includes.

Who the 228236 suits, and the alternatives

The 228236 is for the buyer who wants the top of the Day-Date range and knows it. The ice blue dial is recognisable to collectors, yet it stays quiet to everyone else. On the wrist, platinum's weight is noticeable, so try one before you commit.

For a smaller fit, the Day-Date 36 128236 also has a fluted platinum bezel; our Day-Date 36 vs 40 comparison helps you choose. For less money, the smooth-bezel 228206 is the obvious route. And for a slimmer platinum dress watch with an ice blue dial, look at the Perpetual 1908 52506.

Ownership notes

Rolex suggests modern calibres like the 3255 can run for many years between services. When the time comes, ask the service centre not to polish the fluted bezel. Sharp platinum flutes are what collectors pay for, and they are slow to restore.

Insurance is worth arranging before the watch leaves the shop. At around RM298,000 or more, the 228236 may exceed standard home contents limits in Malaysia, so check your policy wording. Also, keep the warranty card, receipt and any service paperwork in one place. For a thin market like this one, a complete, documented set is often what decides a sale.

228236 FAQ

Why is the 228236 more expensive pre-owned than at retail?

Supply is thin and demand is steady. Authorised dealers receive few platinum Day-Dates, and buyers who want one now pay a premium to skip the queue. Excellent full sets sit around US$70,000–80,000 against a US$68,800 list price, while new or nearly new examples have been asked at about US$84,700–87,500 by dealers in 2026.

Is the ice blue dial only on platinum Rolex watches?

Yes. Rolex reserves the ice blue dial for its platinum models, so on a Day-Date it signals the 228236 or its smooth-bezel predecessor, the 228206. A gold Day-Date with an ice blue dial is either a fake or has an aftermarket dial. That rule makes the dial a useful first check, though fakes copy the colour too.

What is the difference between the 228236 and the 228206?

The bezel. The 228206, made from 2015 to 2022, has a smooth, domed platinum bezel. The 228236 replaced it in 2022 with a fluted platinum bezel, which Rolex had to develop a new process to make. Both use calibre 3255 and the platinum President bracelet. The fluted 228236 currently sells for clearly more.

Is the 228236 worth buying at a Malaysian AD?

If you are offered one at RM298,000, it is good value by market standards, because pre-owned excellent examples convert to roughly RM286,000–326,000. Allocation is the problem. Malaysian authorised dealers see very few platinum Day-Dates, and they tend to go to clients with a purchase history. Expect to wait, and do not pay a deposit to anyone promising a slot.

Does a platinum Day-Date scratch easily?

Platinum is soft in a different way from gold. It tends to displace rather than lose metal, so scratches look like a soft grey patina over time. Many owners like that. However, a polish removes it and blunts the flutes, and on the 228236 a sharp, unpolished bezel is one of the things buyers pay extra for.
