History and reference evolution
Platinum Day-Dates have existed for decades. The 228206, though, belongs to the modern Day-Date 40 era that began in 2015.
From the 218206 to the 228206
The 228206 replaced the 218206, the platinum Day-Date II. That watch measured 41 mm, used calibre 3156 and had broad lugs. Like the gold versions, it felt large for a dress watch.
So in 2015 the 228206 moved to a 40 mm case with slimmer lugs. It also adopted calibre 3255, with a 70-hour reserve and the Chronergy escapement. For value, the shift matters because buyers now pay more for the 40 mm case. As a result, a 218206 usually trades below a comparable 228206.
Why the bezel was smooth
Gold Day-Dates always had fluted bezels. The platinum model, however, wore a smooth, domed bezel instead. Rolex did not flute platinum until 2022, when it introduced a new process for the 228236. That makes the 228206 the last platinum Day-Date 40 with a plain bezel.
Some collectors now seek it out for that reason. The smooth bezel is cleaner and more modern. Others see it as the "lesser" platinum Day-Date. Both views show up in prices.
Dials worth knowing
Plain ice blue is the standard. Beyond it, the ice blue diagonal motif and the Roman quadrant dial lead the market. Blue and olive green dials also existed, and olive green on platinum is scarce. Meteorite with diamonds sits at the top. For each of these, the dial code on the card should match the dial.

Rolex no longer sells the 228206, and we have not confirmed its last US list price. So we compare it with the market instead. An excellent full set trades around US$55,000 – US$63,000, or roughly RM224,000–257,000. That is well below the US$68,800 list price of the fluted 228236.
What moves the price of this reference
- Dial. The ice blue diagonal motif and quadrant dials lead. Olive green and meteorite carry large premiums.
- Bezel condition. A smooth platinum bezel shows polishing easily. Unpolished examples earn more.
- CPO vs private sale. Rolex CPO asks run near US$69,450, far above private deals.
- Full set and bracelet. Papers matter at this level, and a stretched President bracelet costs money to restore.
- Discontinued status. The smooth bezel has its own following, which supports prices.
Where to check prices
Because there is no current retail, use secondary data. Dealer listings for ice blue 228206s ranged from roughly US$52,000 to US$62,500 in 2026. Rolex CPO listings show the top of the market. In Malaysia, few platinum Day-Dates change hands locally, so Singapore and Hong Kong dealers are the realistic comparison. Our used Rolex price guide shows how condition and papers shift these figures.
When a price is too good to be true
Our polished-or-aftermarket band starts at about US$43,000. Therefore a full-set 228206 under that figure, roughly RM175,000, needs a very good explanation. Also be wary of a "platinum" Day-Date priced like white gold. It may be white gold with an aftermarket ice blue dial.
Genuine vs replica: how to check a 228206
First, hold it. Platinum is denser than gold, so a genuine 228206 feels heavy even next to a gold Day-Date. Then look for Pt950 hallmarks between the lugs once the bracelet is off.
The smooth bezel and the dial
The domed bezel should reflect light in one clean, unbroken curve. Fakes often show a slight ridge or an uneven dome. Next, the ice blue dial should look pale and even, with no green or turquoise cast. The day at 12 should be written in full and sit centred in its arched window.
Genuine: laser-etched crown at 6 o'clock
- Made of tiny dots, hard to find without a loupe
- Sits in the crystal just above the 6 o'clock marker
- Present on most Rolex crystals from the early 2000s onward
Warning signs
- Bold and frosted, easy to spot head-on
- Solid lines instead of a dot matrix
- Off-centre, or placed on a reference/era that would not have it
The movement in motion
Film the seconds hand at close range. Calibre 3255 beats eight times per second, so the hand glides. Also set the time past midnight and check that both day and date jump cleanly.
Genuine: seconds-hand sweep
- 28,800 vph: eight small steps per second, reads as a smooth glide on video
- Steady amplitude, no stutter when the watch is tilted
- A quiet, fine-grained ticking close to the ear
Warning signs
- Visibly choppier steps (often 21,600 vph or slower)
- A single one-second tick means a quartz movement
- Loud, rattly rotor noise when the watch is shaken
Bracelet and clasp
The platinum President bracelet uses three-piece semi-circular links. Its concealed Crownclasp should close invisibly, with only the small coronet showing.
Genuine: clasp and bracelet machining
- Crisp transitions between brushed and polished surfaces
- Clasp blade and logo cleanly milled, not stamped-looking
- Bracelet links tight, quiet, no rattle; screws not pins on modern pieces
Warning signs
- Polishing bleeds over brushed edges
- Fuzzy logo, uneven font, or stamped-in look
- Loose links, sharp burrs inside the clasp, cheap spring-loaded feel
What only a watchmaker can confirm
With the case open, a watchmaker can confirm calibre 3255 and its blue Parachrom hairspring. They can also tell whether the dial is original and whether the bezel has been heavily refinished. Our real vs fake Rolex guide and service and value guide explain what to ask for.
Who the 228206 suits, and the alternatives
The 228206 suits a buyer who wants platinum and the ice blue dial without paying the fluted premium. It also suits anyone who simply prefers a smooth bezel. It wears like other Day-Date 40s, but heavier.
The obvious alternative is its successor, the fluted 228236. For a smaller fit, see the Day-Date 36 128236 and our Day-Date 36 vs 40 comparison. If you want gold but a similarly quiet look, the white gold 228239 costs less again.
Owning a smooth platinum bezel
A domed platinum bezel needs a little care at service time. Rolex service centres often refinish cases as standard, so tell them clearly if you want the bezel left alone. Once polished, the dome loses its crisp edge, and that cannot be undone.
Platinum also marks differently from gold. Rather than losing metal, it tends to push it aside, leaving a soft grey patina. Many owners prefer that look to a mirror finish. In addition, keep the warranty card and any service papers together. Because the 228206 is discontinued, a complete history is part of what the next buyer pays for.

228206 FAQ
What is the platinum Day-Date's ice blue dial?
It is a pale, cool blue dial that Rolex reserves for its platinum watches. On the 228206 it came in several forms: plain ice blue, a diagonal motif, a Roman quadrant layout and versions with baguette diamonds. Because no gold Day-Date gets it from the factory, the colour tells you at a glance that the watch should be platinum.
Why was the 228206 discontinued?
Rolex replaced it in 2022 with the 228236, which has a fluted platinum bezel. Before then, Rolex had not fluted platinum, so the platinum Day-Date used a smooth, domed bezel. Once a fluted version was possible, the smooth one was dropped. Movement, case size and bracelet stayed essentially the same.
Is a 228206 better value than a 228236?
On price alone, yes. Excellent 228206 full sets trade around US$55,000–63,000, while the fluted 228236 sits at about US$70,000–80,000. You get the same platinum, dial colour and calibre 3255. What you give up is the classic fluted look, and possibly some future demand if buyers keep favouring it.
Is a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned 228206 worth the extra cost?
Rolex CPO examples have been listed around US$69,450, well above typical private-sale prices. In return you get a Rolex-backed warranty and no doubt about authenticity. For a first platinum purchase, some buyers find that worth paying. If you can arrange an independent inspection, though, a private full set costs far less.
Does a polished smooth bezel hurt the 228206's value?
Yes, more than on a fluted bezel. A smooth, domed platinum bezel shows polishing as a slightly wavy reflection and softened edges. Collectors check this first. An unpolished bezel with fine, honest scratches is usually worth more than a freshly polished one.
