Rolex Day-Date 36 128236 specifications
Platinum changes how a 36 mm watch feels. The 128236 has the same calibre and dimensions as its gold siblings, yet its 950 platinum case, bezel and bracelet make it the heaviest Day-Date 36 by some distance.

History and reference evolution
Platinum Day-Dates are not new. Yet until 2022 they all shared one visual rule: a smooth, domed bezel. Fluting needs crisp, deep cuts, and platinum is notoriously hard to machine that way. So the fluted bezel stayed a gold feature for decades.
Watches and Wonders 2022
That changed at Watches and Wonders 2022. Rolex announced a new process for fluting 950 platinum and launched it on two references: the Day-Date 36 128236 and the Day-Date 40 228236. They were the first Rolex models with a fluted platinum bezel. As a result, the platinum Day-Date now carries the classic President look, rather than the sleeker smooth style.
What came before
Our dataset does not name a direct predecessor for this reference. The lineage is the earlier smooth-bezel platinum Day-Date 36, but we have not verified which exact reference Rolex treats as its forerunner. Practically, though, the comparison is simple. Older smooth-bezel examples cost less used, while the fluted 128236 is the one most buyers now ask for.
Movement and dials
Inside is calibre 3255, with 70 hours of reserve and the Chronergy escapement. The dial list is short and cool-toned: ice blue, ice blue with diamonds, blue ombré with Roman numerals, silver, white Roman and mother-of-pearl. Ice blue matters most, because Rolex reserves it for platinum. Separately, the turquoise stone dial was withdrawn from the Day-Date 36 range in 2026.
128236 pre-owned prices compared
Price bands for platinum are wider than for gold, because so few examples change hands. The table assumes a plain ice blue dial, October 2026.
| Condition | What it means | USD | MYR (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unworn, full set | Stickers or barely worn, box, card dated within ~2 years, all tags | US$64,000 – US$72,000 | RM261,000 – RM294,000 |
| Excellent, box & papers | Light wear, unpolished or lightly polished, warranty card present | US$58,000 – US$66,000 | RM237,000 – RM269,000 |
| Good, no papers | Normal wear, watch only or box only, service history helps | US$51,000 – US$57,000 | RM208,000 – RM233,000 |
| Polished or aftermarket parts | Soft case edges, replaced dial/bezel/bracelet, or non-Rolex parts | US$46,000 – US$51,000 | RM188,000 – RM208,000 |

What moves the price of this reference
Ice blue is the signature dial, and it anchors demand. Diamond-set ice blue dials add a further premium; at the time of writing, some diamond-dial examples were asking around US$68,000. Silver, white Roman and mother-of-pearl dials have smaller followings, so they can take longer to sell.
The fluted bezel itself is a factor. Buyers now favour it over older smooth platinum bezels, which supports the 128236 against earlier platinum models. Beyond that, the usual items apply: full set, bracelet stretch and an unpolished bezel. However, platinum polishes differently from gold, and a skilled refinish is harder to spot. Check flute edges under a loupe.
How to price a thin market
With few listings, any single asking price can mislead. So gather several data points. Start with retail: the ice blue 128236-0018 is US$64,100 in the US and RM277,500 in Malaysia. Converted at 4.08, the Malaysian list is about US$68,000, which is roughly 6% above the US figure. That gap partly reflects tax included in Malaysian pricing.
Next, check dealer stock in Singapore and Hong Kong as well as Kuala Lumpur, since local availability is limited. Marketplace listings give a range, but dial and papers vary widely between them. For deeper context, see our used Rolex price guide and the retail vs market explainer.
Where a low price becomes a warning
Even polished examples with replaced parts sit around US$46,000 to US$51,000. Therefore, a 128236 offered as a complete set below about US$46,000 (roughly RM188,000) should raise immediate doubts. A plain ice blue watch is rarely discounted that hard, simply because sellers know buyers are waiting.
Genuine vs replica: how to check a 128236
A platinum fake is usually a steel watch with a pale blue dial. So the first checks rely on the metal, not the printing.
Density and hallmarks
Platinum is far denser than steel and noticeably denser than white gold. A genuine 128236 feels heavy for its size, even beside the white gold 128239. Then remove the bracelet. The Pt950 hallmark and Swiss assay marks should appear between the lugs, struck cleanly into the case.
Bezel and dial
Next, inspect the fluted bezel. Because Rolex only began fluting platinum in 2022, the flutes should be sharp and perfectly regular. Fakes often show soft or uneven ridges. The ice blue dial should look clean and even, with crisp applied markers. Remember, too, that ice blue appears only on platinum Rolex models. An ice blue dial in a gold case is a warning in itself.
Genuine: cyclops magnification
- Date fills the lens edge to edge
- Numerals stay sharp right to the lens rim
- Lens sits centred over the date window
Warning signs
- Date looks small, with a visible margin
- Lens slightly off-centre or bubbled
- Strong blue anti-glare tint on top of the lens
At 12, the day should be spelled out in full in a neatly arched window. Meanwhile, the rehaut should carry the laser-engraved ROLEX pattern with the serial number at six.
Genuine: rehaut engraving alignment
- Each engraved crown and letter lines up with its minute marker
- Engraving is crisp, even in depth, and readable at 12 o'clock
- Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 on modern pieces
Warning signs
- Letters drift between markers as they go around the ring
- Shallow, sandy-looking or uneven engraving
- Serial at 6 printed rather than engraved, or wrong format
Clasp and calendar change
The President bracelet should close on a fully concealed Crownclasp, opened by lifting the small coronet. Equally, the day and date should both jump instantly at midnight.
Genuine: clasp and bracelet machining
- Crisp transitions between brushed and polished surfaces
- Clasp blade and logo cleanly milled, not stamped-looking
- Bracelet links tight, quiet, no rattle; screws not pins on modern pieces
Warning signs
- Polishing bleeds over brushed edges
- Fuzzy logo, uneven font, or stamped-in look
- Loose links, sharp burrs inside the clasp, cheap spring-loaded feel
What only a watchmaker can confirm
For a watch at this price, an opened caseback is not optional. A watchmaker can confirm calibre 3255, the blue Parachrom hairspring and correct finishing. They can also check that the dial, hands and bracelet links are original, and that the case and papers carry matching serials. In Malaysia, ask an independent watchmaker in KL, or arrange verification through the Rolex service centre.
Who the 128236 suits, and the alternatives
Few people buy a 128236 on impulse. The 128236 suits someone who values platinum's weight and rarity, likes the ice blue signal, and prefers the 36 mm size. It does not shout. Most people will read it as white gold or steel, which many owners enjoy.
If you prefer a larger case, the Day-Date 40 228236 pairs the same fluted platinum bezel with a 40 mm case. Our Day-Date 36 vs 40 page compares the two sizes. For a smooth-bezel platinum look at a lower used price, the discontinued 228206 is worth a look.
Owning and servicing a platinum Day-Date
Platinum ages differently from gold. A scratch on platinum tends to push metal aside rather than remove it, so the case develops a soft, slightly matte patina over time. Some owners like that look. Others prefer the factory finish, which a Rolex service can restore with relatively little metal loss.
Weight is the other practical point. A full platinum President is heavy, and on a small wrist it can slide around if the bracelet is sized loosely. So have it fitted carefully, ideally with half a link of room for warm, humid days. Also insure it properly; at this value, many Malaysian home policies need the watch listed separately. Finally, keep every document. On a reference that trades this thinly, a complete set is often what separates a quick sale from a long wait, as our box and papers guide explains.
Lower-cost routes to the look
Alternatively, if platinum is beyond your budget, the white gold 128239 gives a similar colour for far less. And for an overview of the alloys, read our Rolex materials guide.

128236 FAQ
How much is the Rolex Day-Date 36 128236 in Malaysia?
The ice blue 128236-0018 lists at RM277,500 at Malaysian official retailers as of October 2026, against US$64,100 in the US. Excellent pre-owned full sets sell for about US$58,000 to US$66,000, or roughly RM237,000 to RM269,000. Diamond dials sit higher.
What is the platinum Day-Date's ice blue dial?
Ice blue is a pale, glacial blue that Rolex reserves for its platinum watches. It acts as a visual signature, so a buyer can tell platinum from white gold at a glance. On the 128236 it comes plain or with diamonds.
When did Rolex start fluting platinum bezels?
In 2022. Rolex developed a new process to flute 950 platinum and introduced it on the Day-Date 36 128236 and the Day-Date 40 228236. Earlier platinum Day-Dates used smooth, domed bezels, because platinum is difficult to machine into sharp flutes.
Is platinum heavier than gold?
Yes. Platinum is considerably denser than 18 ct white gold, so a full platinum President feels noticeably heavier than the 128239. For many owners that weight is the point. For others it makes the 36 mm size the more comfortable choice.
Does the 128236 hold its value?
It trades near retail rather than far above it. Few examples come up for sale, so prices spread widely between sellers. Unworn full sets can exceed list, while worn examples without papers sit well below. Patience usually gets a better price.
Can a platinum Rolex be faked?
Yes, usually in steel with a printed ice blue dial. Weight, the Pt950 hallmark between the lugs and the precise flutes are the first checks. A watchmaker should still open the case. Our real vs fake Rolex guide explains the process.
