Rolex 1908 52509 specifications

Mechanically, the 52509 is identical to its yellow gold and platinum siblings. However, white gold changes how the watch looks and, as the price section shows, how the market values it.

History and reference evolution

Rolex introduced the 52509 in 2023 as one of the two launch models of the Perpetual 1908. The other was the yellow gold 52508. Together they replaced the Cellini, Rolex's long-running dress collection, which was retired the same year.

A new movement, shown off

The real news was calibre 7140. It is a slim automatic with the Chronergy escapement, a silicon Syloxi hairspring and a 66-hour reserve. It is certified as a Superlative Chronometer, Rolex's in-house standard. For once, Rolex also let owners see it: a sapphire caseback shows the decorated bridges and an openworked gold rotor.

Design choices

Outside, the 52509 keeps the domed-and-fluted double bezel familiar from the late Cellini models. Then it adds things the Cellini rarely had: Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12, and a small seconds sub-dial at 6. The case is 39 mm wide and only 9.5 mm thick. On the white gold model, the polished bezel and case almost disappear against a white dial, which makes the black dial the more graphic choice.

Why the history matters for value

The 52509 has no predecessor to compare against, and no successor yet. That leaves the market to price it purely on demand. So far, demand for white gold has trailed yellow gold and platinum. Meanwhile, Rolex has kept list prices rising. The result is the discount you see below.

52509 pre-owned prices compared

Here are October 2026 bands for the Rolex 1908 52509. The US list price is US$30,300; Malaysian ADs list it at RM131,200. WatchCharts put the typical market price at about US$22,600, roughly 25% under list.

What moves the price of this reference

In this case, the biggest factor is simply metal. White gold trades at a discount to retail on the 1908, unlike platinum, which trades above it. Beyond that, the usual factors apply. Dial colour shifts asks a little, though neither dial holds a reliable premium. A full set helps resale, since dress watches are often bought as gifts. Also, a worn alligator strap costs money to replace through Rolex.

Notably, even unworn full sets sit below list, at roughly US$24,000–27,000. That tells you the discount is structural, not just a result of wear.

Where to check prices

Compare three sources. First, the AD list price, which here is the ceiling rather than the floor. Second, WatchCharts and grey dealers, which show the realistic market. Third, private sellers, who sometimes still anchor on list price and need gentle correction. For Malaysian buyers, Singapore and Hong Kong dealers often have more 1908 stock; just factor in currency and any import costs. Our retail vs market price guide explains why some Rolex models sit below list.

When a price is too good to be true

Because the 52509 is already discounted, fake listings have less room to undercut. Even so, our polished-watch band starts around US$14,900. Any 52509 offered as a complete set below about US$14,000 (roughly RM57,000) is suspicious. At that level, the gold value alone leaves almost no margin for a genuine seller.

Genuine vs replica: how to check a 52509

White gold is hard to judge by eye, since steel looks almost the same. So the checks for this reference lean on the movement window, the weight and the engraving. The wider method is in our guide to fake Rolex watches.

Caseback and movement

A genuine Rolex 1908 52509 always has a sapphire display back. Through it you should see calibre 7140, its Côtes de Genève stripes and the openworked gold rotor. Replicas typically show a generic movement with coarse decoration, or a rotor in a colour that does not match gold.

Genuine: caseback

plain, fluted screw-down back
  • Solid Oystersteel or gold, fluted edge for the case wrench
  • No engraving on most models (some are factory-engraved, e.g. Sea-Dweller and Deepsea)
  • Display backs are factory-fitted only on certain models (e.g. some Daytona, 1908, Land-Dweller)

Warning signs

see-through or engraved back
  • Exhibition window on a model Rolex makes with a solid back
  • Stickers or decorative engravings sold as 'factory'
  • Back that turns too easily or sits proud of the case
The diagram shows Rolex's usual solid back, but the 1908 is one of the exceptions: every genuine 52509 has a factory sapphire caseback showing calibre 7140. A solid back on a 52509 is the warning sign.

Weight and finishing

Solid 18 kt white gold is noticeably heavier than steel. A 52509 that feels light for its size deserves suspicion. Next, look at the bezel. The fluted lower half should have crisp, even ridges, while the domed upper half should be mirror-polished with no ripples.

Rehaut and crystal

Look under the crystal edge. The rehaut carries an engraving and the serial number, and it should be crisp and even. A faint, dotted coronet should also sit in the crystal above 6.

Genuine: rehaut engraving alignment

markers on the minute track
  • Each engraved crown and letter lines up with its minute marker
  • Engraving is crisp, even in depth, and readable at 12 o'clock
  • Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 on modern pieces

Warning signs

markers drift off-track
  • Letters drift between markers as they go around the ring
  • Shallow, sandy-looking or uneven engraving
  • Serial at 6 printed rather than engraved, or wrong format
On a 52509, the rehaut engraving should be evenly cut and aligned, with the serial engraved, never printed.

What only a watchmaker can confirm

A watchmaker can identify the 7140 by its calibre markings and its Syloxi hairspring, and check the rate on a timing machine. They can also confirm the case metal. In addition, ask them to check the clasp is solid white gold and Rolex-signed. Then compare the warranty card details with the case, using our box and papers guide.

Who the 52509 suits, and the alternatives

The Rolex 1908 52509 suits a buyer who wants a precious-metal Rolex dress watch at the lowest realistic price. It also suits people who prefer gold to stay discreet. At first glance, many will assume it is steel.

Wrist fit

The 39 mm case and 9.5 mm height suit wrists from about 15.5 to 19 cm (6.1 to 7.5 in). Because the strap curves close to the wrist, the watch sits low. As a result, it works with tailored shirts in a way a Daytona or Submariner never will.

Alternatives

If you want gold that looks like gold, the yellow gold 52508 holds its value better. For something rarer, the platinum 52506 adds the ice blue guilloché dial at a higher price. For a white-metal dress watch with a date, consider the Datejust 36 126234 instead. See our 1908 collection overview for a side-by-side table.

52509 FAQ

Why does the 1908 52509 sell below retail?

Demand for white gold dress watches is narrow, and the 1908 has been easy enough to buy new. In October 2026 WatchCharts tracked the 52509 at about US$22,600 against a US$30,300 list price. White gold also looks like steel to most people, so buyers who want visible gold choose the yellow 52508 instead.

How much is the Rolex 1908 52509 in Malaysia?

Malaysian authorised dealers list it at RM131,200 in October 2026. Pre-owned with box and papers, it converts to roughly RM84,000–100,000. That gap of more than RM30,000 is unusual for a current Rolex, and it is the main reason to consider buying second-hand.

Is the white gold 1908 a good first Rolex?

It can be, if you want a dress watch rather than a daily sports watch. The 50 m rating and alligator strap limit it in rain and heat. For a first Rolex you will wear every day, our first Rolex buying guide suggests tougher Oyster models.

Will the 52509 go up in value?

Nobody can promise that, and we would not buy it expecting a profit. The more useful point is that much of the depreciation has already happened. A buyer paying around US$22,000 today is unlikely to see the steep first-year drop that hit people who paid list in 2023.

What dials does the 52509 come with?

Rolex lists the 52509 with intense white or intense black dials. Both have Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12, and a small seconds sub-dial at 6. The ice blue guilloché dial belongs to the platinum 52506, not the white gold model.
