History and reference evolution
White gold has been part of the Sky-Dweller range since 2012, when it appeared on a leather strap at launch. For most of the following decade, though, white gold buyers chose between leather and a full gold bracelet. Sporty white gold Sky-Dwellers were rare.
A new pairing in 2023
The Sky-Dweller 336239 arrived with the calibre 9002 generation in 2023. According to our records, it is the first white gold Sky-Dweller on the Oysterflex. Rolex also offers the strap on Everose and yellow gold Sky-Dwellers, as well as on the Yacht-Master and Daytona. Here it gives a heavy complication a lighter, more casual character. Therefore, this reference has no direct older equivalent to compare against, which makes it different from its siblings.
Calibre 9002
The movement is the same 9002 used across the line. In other words, choosing the strap version costs you nothing in function. It adds the Chronergy escapement over the old 9001, keeps the 72-hour reserve and carries the Superlative Chronometer certification. Inside, the Saros annual calendar and the off-centre 24-hour disc work exactly as on the bracelet models.
Black or white dial
Rolex offers the Sky-Dweller 336239 with two dials. Bright black matches the strap and makes the watch read almost as a sports piece. Intense white lifts it, so the white gold case looks brighter and the red month marker stands out more clearly. That legibility matters on a calendar watch, where you read the month at a glance. Prices are close, so the choice is mainly about how you plan to wear it.
What this means for value
Because no older white gold Oysterflex model exists, you cannot save money by buying a previous generation. However, the Sky-Dweller 336239 already trades well below list. So, in effect, the used market provides the discount that a predecessor usually would. Our retail vs market price guide explains why some precious-metal Rolex references trade under list.

Bands reflect asking and achieved prices from 2 public market sources in October 2026, rounded. Retail for comparison: US$53,450. Prices move; use them as a sense-check, not a quote.
The Sky-Dweller 336239 shows the widest gap between list and market in the line. Rolex asks US$53,450 in the US and RM231,200 in Malaysia. Yet the excellent full-set band is only US$35,000 – US$40,000, with an October 2026 WatchCharts average of about US$37,800. That is roughly 29% under retail, so the first owner absorbs a large loss.
What moves the price of this reference
For this reference, condition of the strap and case counts for more than dial colour.
- Strap condition. Cuts, stretched holes or a hardened surface on the Oysterflex lower the price, because a replacement strap is an extra cost.
- Papers. With few examples about, a watch without its card is harder to sell, and buyers mark it down accordingly. Our guide to box and papers covers the details.
- Dial colour. Black is more common and easier to resell. White suits a lighter, dressier look. The price gap is small.
- Bezel condition. White gold flutes dent. Once polished, their crisp edges soften and the value drops.
Where to check prices
Here the boutique quote serves mainly as a ceiling. At RM231,200, buying new makes sense only if you want an untouched watch and a full warranty from day one. By contrast, independent dealers on both sides of the Causeway tend to price white gold close to the US market, which sits far below list. Few examples reach local classifieds, so check international listings too. Auction results confirm the discount. For our method, read the used Rolex price guide.
Caring for the Oysterflex
The strap is tough, but it is the part of a 336239 that ages first. Rinse it in fresh water after swimming or a sweaty day, and dry it with a soft cloth. Avoid sunscreen and insect repellent where you can, since some chemicals dull the elastomer. Also, check the holes near the clasp, because they take the most stress. When buying used, ask whether the strap is original to the watch. A replacement from a Rolex service centre is possible, but it adds cost and waiting time.
When a price is too good to be true
Even with its large discount, a genuine 336239 has a floor. Treat any full set below about US$28,000 (roughly RM114,000) with suspicion. No honest seller needs to go that low. Also be careful with listings that show the watch only from the front. A steel replica on a black rubber strap can look convincing in a photo.
Genuine vs replica: how to check a 336239
White gold is the easiest gold to fake visually, because it looks like steel. So photographs are of little help with this reference. Start with handling and function instead, then use the checklist in our real vs fake Rolex guide.
Weight and the Oysterflex
Even on a light strap, the solid gold head of a Sky-Dweller 336239 feels dense. A steel replica feels noticeably lighter. On the strap, look at the moulding: a genuine Oysterflex has clean edges, cushion ridges on the underside and a crisp Rolex logo. The Oysterlock clasp is solid white gold, with sharp engravings and a smooth safety lever.
Ring Command function
Pull the crown out to its single position and rotate the bezel through its three notches. In turn, the crown should set the date, then the local hour, then the reference time on the 24-hour disc. The local hour hand should jump in whole hours while the watch keeps running. A decorative bezel that does nothing is the most common replica shortcut.
Genuine: bezel action and alignment
- Divers' bezels: 120 firm, evenly spaced clicks, one direction only
- Pearl or triangle lands exactly on 12 at every full click
- No back-play or wobble when pressed
Warning signs
- Fewer or mushy clicks, or it turns both ways
- Triangle stops just short of or past 12
- Gritty feel and a hollow, high-pitched sound
Rehaut, crystal and caseback
The rehaut reads "ROLEX" around the dial, with the serial number at 6 o'clock. A tiny coronet is laser-etched into the crystal above 6 too. The caseback is plain, solid and screw-down. There is no exhibition window on any Sky-Dweller, so a display back is an instant fail.
Genuine: rehaut engraving alignment
- Each engraved crown and letter lines up with its minute marker
- Engraving is crisp, even in depth, and readable at 12 o'clock
- Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 on modern pieces
Warning signs
- Letters drift between markers as they go around the ring
- Shallow, sandy-looking or uneven engraving
- Serial at 6 printed rather than engraved, or wrong format
Genuine: caseback
- Solid Oystersteel or gold, fluted edge for the case wrench
- No engraving on most models (some are factory-engraved, e.g. Sea-Dweller and Deepsea)
- Display backs are factory-fitted only on certain models (e.g. some Daytona, 1908, Land-Dweller)
Warning signs
- Exhibition window on a model Rolex makes with a solid back
- Stickers or decorative engravings sold as 'factory'
- Back that turns too easily or sits proud of the case
What only a watchmaker can confirm
Opening the case shows whether the 9002 inside is real. The bridges should carry the calibre number, and the balance should sit on a blue hairspring. Next, the watchmaker can confirm that the dial and hands are original, since a white dial is easy to swap. A precious-metal test settles the white gold question for good. Any reputable independent watchmaker in KL can do this, and an honest seller will not object.
Who the 336239 suits, and the alternatives
The Sky-Dweller 336239 suits someone who wants gold without showing it. It is also a natural fit for a traveller in a hot climate, since the strap is light and shrugs off sweat. Because it trades so far under list, it suits a pre-owned buyer best. The 42 mm head wears large, but the strap curves in closely, so it suits wrists of roughly 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) and up.
For a similar look with a simpler movement, the Yacht-Master 42 226659 pairs white gold with an Oysterflex at a lower list price. If you would rather have a classic dress watch, the Day-Date 40 228239 in white gold also trades below retail. Within the line, the steel-and-white-gold Sky-Dweller 336934 gives a similar colour on a bracelet for far less money. Our Sky-Dweller vs Day-Date comparison and the Sky-Dweller collection page cover the rest.

Yacht-Master 42 226659
White gold, 42 mm, Oysterflex: a heavy-metal sports Rolex that sells far under list on the secondary market.

Day-Date 40 228239
White gold President with a fluted bezel. The quiet Day-Date, and usually the one trading furthest below retail.

Sky-Dweller 336934
42 mm Oystersteel with a white gold fluted bezel, calibre 9002, mint green, blue, black or white dial.
336239 FAQ
Why is the 336239 so far below retail on the used market?
White gold looks like steel to most people, so buyers paying gold prices tend to choose a metal that shows it. The Oysterflex strap also limits the bracelet-loving buyer pool. As a result, the Sky-Dweller 336239 traded near US$37,800 in October 2026 against a US$53,450 list. That is roughly 29% under retail.
How much is the Rolex Sky-Dweller 336239 in Malaysia?
The official Malaysian list price is RM231,200 as of October 2026, confirmed at Cortina Watch and The Hour Glass. Excellent pre-owned full sets convert to roughly RM143,000 to RM163,000. So a used example can cost around RM70,000 less than new, which is the largest gap in the Sky-Dweller line.
What is the Oysterflex strap made of?
Oysterflex is Rolex's own design. Inside are flexible metal blades that keep the strap's shape. These are over-moulded in black elastomer, which resists heat, sweat and water. On the underside, small cushions help it sit steadily on the wrist. It closes with an Oysterlock folding safety clasp in 18k white gold.
Can I fit a metal bracelet to the 336239?
Physically, a watchmaker can fit a white gold Oyster bracelet, but it is a costly part to source and it changes what you own. The reference remains 336239, and the papers will still describe an Oysterflex watch. If you want a bracelet, buying a bracelet Sky-Dweller from the start is usually cheaper.
Is the Oysterflex strap good in Malaysian weather?
Yes, it is one of the better choices for heat and humidity. It does not absorb sweat like leather, and it rinses clean under fresh water. It also weighs far less than a gold bracelet. However, it gets warm in direct sun, and the elastomer can collect lint, so rinse it regularly.
Is the white gold Sky-Dweller a good buy used?
For a wearer, yes. You get solid gold and the full calibre 9002 complication for far less than list. The trade-off is that resale will likely stay soft too, so it suits buyers who plan to keep it. Check that the strap is in good order, because replacing it adds cost.
